Go With The Flow

Save Water, Save Energy, Save Money & Save the Planet
We all know that water is a precious resource.  But what can we do to help to preserve it?  Around 34% of our water usage is accounted for by showers and faucets.  But don't think that you have to sacrifice the enjoyment of your shower to make a difference.  There are a few easy and inexpensive solutions to help you save water without making sacrifices.

What Makes It Green?
The EPA estimates that a family of 4 can save approximately 20,000 gallons of water a year just by switching to low flow shower heads.  That's a lot of savings in water and money especially considering that low flow shower heads can cost less than $5 each.

How do you make a low-flow faucet still have a strong flow?  Install a faucet aerator, which infuses air into the water stream breaking the water into little droplets.  Aerators are inexpensive and can reduce a faucet's water usage by up to 60%.  The best thing is that you will never be able to tell a difference in the flow.

What You Can Do
  • Check your showerhead water usage by turning on the shower and timing how long it takes to fill up a 5 gallon bucket. If it takes less than 2 minutes, swap it for a new low-flow shower head.
  • Consider switching to low-flow faucets. They use as little as 1.6 gallons of water per minute compared to up to 5 gallons a minute for traditional models.
  • Fix any faucet leaks and drips - don't waste precious water or money.
  • Install faucet aerators to reduce water usage.
  • Reduce water pressure by installing pressure-reducing valves.

If a faucet drips at a rate of one drop per second, you would waste 2,700 gallons of water in a year.
