Book It

Read All About It
A good book can help you learn something or explore a new place.  It can open your eyes, your heart and your mind.  Keep your love of a good book alive and preserve our forests.  Global paper consumption has tripled over the past 30 years and is expected to grow by half again before 2010.  We can all make a difference in that expansion by cutting back on the amount of new paper products we purchase.

What Makes It Green?
Preserving trees helps to improve air quality. American Forests reports that just 25,000 acres of forest can offset the equivalent emissions of 10 billion automobile miles. By reusing books, we can make a difference in many ways.  In addition to saving trees, cutting back on paper production also saves water and energy too.  The US pulp and paper industry is the 2nd largest consumer of energy and uses more water to produce a ton of product that any other industry.

What You Can Do
  • Consider buying books online or from a used book store. You can find book stores that sell used books in your area at http://www.book-stores-guide.com/index.html.
  • Take your unwanted books to a used book store, the library or a local charity so someone else can enjoy it.
  • Check out a book swap. There are many organized book swaps available (http://www.paperbackswap.com/index.php, http://www.swaptree.com and http://www.bookmooch.com are just a few).
  • You can also create your own book swap with friends and neighbors. Just have everyone attending bring their unwanted books. Each person can take away the same number of books that they brought. Everyone leaves with great new reading material and any books left over can go to the local library or charity.

My absolute favorite place to check out used books is our local library.  I've borrowed some books that I would have never purchased.  Doing this expands my horizons - I'm not just reading books on the subjects that I'm typically interested in when purchasing a new book.
