Art With Heart for the Planet
Artwork speaks to our innermost soul. It is personal and passionate. We create or buy pieces that move us and reflect our interests. Art has long been a catalyst for social awareness and positive change. Green art isn't about the color choices of the artist, but about the material choices. Selecting earth-friendly art supplies, doesn't affect the integrity of the art; but it can affect our health and that of the planet. It can also show those viewing it how beautiful being "green" can be. What Makes It Green? Artwork can be planet friendly in many different ways. Each choice makes a difference in saving natural resources and/or limiting exposure to toxins, which off-gas and cause potential health problems. Frames can be made of wood certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council - www.fscus.org) or recycled wood or repurposed items. They can also be reused over and over to feature new pieces of art. They way frames are constructed and finished can also be green through corn-based biodegradable glues and non-toxic finishes. Mat boards and canvases can be made from renewable cotton or recycled fiber. Paper can be acid free, FSC approved and/or made from 100% recycled pulp. Non-toxic paints are available that won't emit harmful off-gasses. Pencils made from FSC certified wood or recycled paper are good options. Even all purpose paint thinners and brush cleaning solvents can be made from all natural and healthy products. What You Can Do

![]() A special thanks to my friend, Joycelyn Hairston, who educated me on green artwork. Two of my favorite galleries that feature amazing eco-friendly artwork are Mason Murer Fine Arts (www.masonmurer.com) and Studio Swan (www.studioswan.com). |
