Eco-friendly Fundraising

Raise Money and Awareness
Schools, sports teams, clubs and other non-profit groups all use fundraisers as a way to make the money they need to operate.  A great consideration when choosing a fundraiser is not only how it can benefit the organization, but also how it might benefit the earth.  Eco-friendly fundraisers help raise environmental awareness in the community, teach children the importance of taking care of the earth and often provide "green" items to sell.

What Makes It Green?
It is critical that we raise awareness of the importance of our role in taking care of the environment.  We need to help educate ourselves and others on how we can make a difference and why it's important to do so.  Fundraisers are a unique opportunity to educate not only the community, but also our children.  The information shared during the fundraising effort can help kids understand why it's important to take care of the earth.  It also shows them that they can make a difference - even at a young age.  Empowering our young people to take responsibility for the stewardship of our planet is one of the most important things we can do for the future.

What You Can Do
Consider an eco-friendly fundraiser for your school or non-profit group.  Here are just a few options:
  • TerraCycle (www.terracycle.net) - Collects 15 different types of "trash" (pouches, wrappers, and bags) and transforms them into 56 cool items like lunchboxes, pencil cases, backpacks and totes. They donate money to the non-profit of your choice for the items collected and sent to them in prepaid shipping envelopes.
  • iCareBags (www.icarebags.com) - Gives a money making opportunity that also promotes the use of reusable shopping bags. The organization receives a portion of the sales proceeds along with a fact sheet, product flyers and an informative video on our role in improving the environment. Their bags are durable, roomy, colorful and made from woven polypropylene (so can be wiped clean and will continue to look great use after use).
  • Koru (www.korufundraising.com) - Gives a choice of either a stainless steel reusable water bottle with the organization's logo on it or a catalog of over 40 eco-friendly products to sell. The catalog products are unique, non-toxic, fair-trade items and 75% are under $10. They also provide the organization with a "kick-off" DVD and other educational materials.
  • Greenraising (www.greenraising.com) - Gives a choice of a web drive or catalog drive to sell over 100 eco-friendly products ranging from $4 to over $100. The organization receives between 25 and 40% of the sales proceeds as well as event ideas, educational materials and lesson plans on the importance of making good environmental choices.

My daughter's school is collecting empty drink pouches and sending them to the TerraCycle Drink Pouch Brigade to raise money for a non-profit that does research for childhood cancer.  All schools do fundraisers - I love this one because the kids are learning about helping others and taking care of the earth!
