Newsworthy Items

Read All About It
Every month, millions of people anxiously watch their mailboxes for their magazine subscriptions.  You are certainly not alone if your magazines are you're favorite mail.  In 2006, about 19,500 different magazines were published and almost 370 million copies were sold that year.  That's a lot of paper, so it's important that we subscribers make an effort to reuse or recycle our used stacks.

What Makes It Green?
One option for used magazines is to reuse them.  Take your used stacks to retirement homes, doctor offices and hospitals.  There are many people there who will enjoy reading them even if they aren't current.

Another eco-friendly choice is to recycle them.  Most magazines are printed on coated, ground wood paper, which is the same kind of paper used by newspapers.  Most curbside recycling programs accept magazines.  If yours doesn't or you don't have curbside recycling, you can find out where to recycle old magazines at www.Earth911.com.

You can also help make the earth a "greener" place by buying items made from recycled magazines.  Artisans around the world create unique and beautiful items from old magazines.

What You Can Do

  • Recycle your old magazines so someone else can enjoy them (by reading them or transforming them into art).
  • Buy products produced supporting fair trade and promoting business practices that are conscientious of their environmental impact.
  • BeadforLife (www.beadforlife.org) - Beautiful jewelry made from recycled magazines. The beaders are impoverished women in Uganda, who are in the process of building sustainable lives. BeadforLife also sponsors Community Development projects in health, vocational training for impoverished youth, affordable housing, and business development for all impoverished people living in Uganda.
  • Consider hosting a BeadforLife Beadparty. You can get information on how to host a free party on their website.
  • Try making your own magazine bead jewelry. You'll find instructions and the necessary supplies on FreeKidsCrafts.com.
  • OriginalGood (www.originalgood.com) - Magazines transformed into picture frames, trivets, baskets and boxes. 20 Vietnamese artisans from the rural Tuy Hoa Province create these amazing pieces for fair wages, skills training and the chance to work from home.
  • TwoFold Designs (www.twofoldesigns.com) - Upcycles discarded items with recycled magazines to create inspiring bowls, vases, picture frames and coasters. A furniture collection is also coming soon.

In many countries, there are few jobs or opportunities for the poor.  In some cases, trade rules unfairly discriminate against farmers and merchants from developing countries.  You can help by buying Fair Trade items which pay people living wages.

I absolutely love my BeadforLife bracelets!   I wear them all the time, individually and in groups of 3 or 4.  They add a great pop of color to any outfit and are really comfortable to wear.  I also love that they are "green" and help to support a great cause.
