Education to Empower
"Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors; we borrow it from our children." -Ancient Native American Proverb.  In addition to doing our part to take care of Mother Earth, we also need to pass on our knowledge to the children of the world.  No one and no action is "too small" to make a difference.

What Makes It Green?

Because our children will be tomorrow's stewards of the planet, there is nothing more critical than teaching them the importance of the wise use of the earth and its resources.  We empower children by teaching them about the environment, the challenges it faces and the steps that they can take to help care for it.

What You Can Do

Here are some great resources to share with your children:
  • Play the "Learn to Recycle" Game and Activity Kit, from Lakeshore Learning, with your kids. It's a fun hands-on way to learn about recycling for ages 4 and up.
  • Check out the EPA's Environmental Kid's Club, which has really great information provided in a fun format. The interactive game and storybook, Recycle City, is especially cool.
  • Read "Everything Kids Environment Book" and "365 Ways to Live Green (for Kids)" by Sheri Amsel. Both books are for older kids and are available at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and Borders Books. The first is a super fun book for with over 30 puzzles, activities and things to try. The second is a years worth of topics to raise environmental awareness (with grown-ups too).
  • For younger kids (ages 3 - 8), "Think Green" by Jeanine Getz and "Ethan Goes Green" by Holy Bell are both fun and easy to comprehend.
  • Look over the "Earth Matters" Encyclopedia of Ecology, from DK Publishing. This large, hardback book has interesting pictures and visual examples. It provides good explanations of the basics of the environment, conservation, environmental issues and sustainability. It also gives kids information on oceans, the regions of the earth and ideas on how they can make a positive change.

Rainforests have taken thousands of years to form but every second a portion the size of a football field is destroyed.

My kids love the book "Think Green" by Jeanine Behr Getz.  Its illustrations, by Jenny Nightingale, are bright and eye-catching.  More importantly, its message is simple, applicable and helps kids understand what "green is...".  Get your own copy at www.kidsthinkbig.com.
