Reuse Halloween Craft

Will You Be My Mummy?
Looking for a fun, easy and planet-friendly Halloween craft?  Well, look no further.  The Mummy Canister is a lot of fun for crafters of all ages and can be made from a variety of reused items.  It takes less than 15 minutes to make and is a great holder for Halloween treats and treasures.

What Makes It Green?
Making crafts out of items headed to the recycle bin (or worse yet, the trash) is a great way to curb your impact on the planet.  The more we can reuse items instead of turning them into waste, the better for everyone.  Reuse saves landfill space and the energy to transport items there.  Making new items from reused ones also helps to cut back on the amount of raw materials needed to produce new items.

What You Can Do
Follow these easy steps to make your own Mummy Canister:
  • Choose the canister you want to transform - make sure it's cleaned and dry. I used large yogurt tubs, but you could make a smaller version with a small yogurt container. You can also make an open top version from any tub or can that's at least 4 inches tall and 3 inches in diameter (ie..frozen juice can or soup can).
  • Cut white paper to fit the canister (and lid if applicable). I used the recycled flip chart paper. You could also use the blank side of used printer paper. You are covering it with gauze, so if a little of the printing on the reverse shows through it won't hurt. Choose paper with very little printing on the back for the lid as there is no gauze to cover it later.
  • Using a non-toxic, white glue and a small paint brush, glue the cut white paper onto the canister.
  • Glue 2 rounds on top of each other to cover the lid (so the writing on the tub doesn't show through).
  • Use the same glue and brush to glue on strips of white gauze or cheese cloth. Over lap the strips and place them a little unevenly so they have the look of a mummy.
  • Finally, glue on google eyes to bring your spooky mummy "to life".

When bacteria in landfills break down trash, the result is a gas that's about 50% methane and 50% carbon dioxide.  Both of these greenhouse gases contribute to trapping heat in the atmosphere.

I made 18 of the large yogurt tub Mummies and used them as "goodie bags" for my son's Haunted House birthday party.  They were a big hit with his guests and I felt good about not adding more plastic goodie bags to landfills.
