Sutainable Storage

Organized Bamboo
The dreaded "drop zone".  Every house has one and it usually lives up to it's name.  Everything literally gets dropped there.  Just because we all like to unload our stuff when we walk in the door, doesn't mean that it has to be a complete mess.  There are a large number of ways to clean up the drop zone and customize it to meet your needs and your taste.  One beautiful, durable and sustainable way to organize your clutter is bamboo storage accessories.  They provide an elegant feel and come in a variety of choices.

What Makes It Green?
Bamboo is remarkable.  It's the most environmentally sound plant in the world. Not a wood but a grass, bamboo regenerates quickly - for some varieties, as much as 3-4 feet every day.  Growing over 30% faster than the fastest growing tree, it is the fastest growing plant on earth.

Due to the inter-connected root system, bamboo groves fully regenerate faster than timber without the need for replanting.  The bamboo plant's stalks can grow to be up to 50 feet high and several inches thick.

Bamboo plants are also good for the planet because they can grow without pesticides and fertilizers even in poor or overgrazed soil.  They actually feed the topsoil over time because of the amount of "litter" that falls from the plants.
What You Can Do
Buy bamboo organization and storage products.
  • The Container Store has a large assortment of bamboo organizers for desktop, closets and drawers. Check them out online at ContainerStore.com or at a ContainerStore near you.
  • When cleaning up your drop zone, be sure to include a place to put your mail.  A letter organizer is nice.  Don't forget a place to toss your junk mail for recycling later - try a bamboo lattice waste basket.
  • Another must have in any drop zone is a place to recharge your phones. Try the KangaroomStorage 2 or 3 pod bamboo docking stations.
  • If you have space, it's nice to have a place to sit down and take off shoes and coats. A bamboo storage bench would be a great place to do just that and store away clutter too! Target has a cool one for less than $200.

Bamboo can be harvested with almost no impact on the environment.  It re-grows fully in only 3 - 5 years and produces 25% more yield than timber.
