Green Dental Hygiene

Brush Up For An Eco-friendly Mouth
October is National Dental Hygiene Month.  That's a good thing considering all of the sweet treats we eat during the holidays - starting with Halloween.  Taking good care of our mouth is important for our overall health, but it can also help the environment.

What Makes It Green?
Keep in mind that what goes into your mouth is absorbed into your body through your mouth and gums.  That's why the dental products you choose are just as important as what you choose to eat, wear and put in your home.  Choosing all natural, non-toxic dental products protects you from unnecessary and potentially harmful chemicals and also helps the environment.  All those chemicals in traditional dental products are swished and spit right down the drain and into our water systems.

What You Can Do
  • Be aware of what you eat. Eating a well balanced diet, heavy in fruits and vegetables leads to good health - dental health included. Also, consider cutting down on the amount of sugar and starches that you eat to help prevent tooth decay.
  • Floss and brush your teeth at least twice each day.
  • Consider using dental care products made with all natural ingredients. Tom's of Maine is one of several companies that produce all natural toothpastes, flosses and mouthwashes. They have 12 paste flavors with naturally sourced fluoride, sensitivity and whitening options. They also have children's strawberry or orange-mango flavored paste with and without natural fluoride.
  • Visit your dentist for cleanings every 6 months (or at least once a year).
  • See if there is an eco-dentist near you. These dentists rethink how they run their offices and clinics to be more sustainable and environmentally-friendly. They do this in a large variety of ways ranging from the construction of the building to the business practices and the products that they use. A dry dental vacuum pump can save approximately 24,600 gallons of water per year - that's more than 570 bathtubs full of water!

We use Tom's of Maine Anticavity toothpaste in spearmint.  It has a mild flavor, nice texture and is the only natural toothpaste accepted by the American Dental Association (ADA).
