Shedding a Little Light on Eco-friendly Lamps
Turning on a lamp can bring a warm glow to the room as well as illuminate the space. Lamps provide us much needed mood to the lighting of our rooms. The next time you reach to turn on a lamp, think about using one that is as environmentally friendly as it is beautiful. Artist and designer Laurie White uses glass bottles, vases and any other interesting old vessels to create unique and beautiful lamps. Even though she uses old items for her lighting, she likes for the shape of each lamp to be clean and polished.
What Makes It Green?
The EPA says that between 1960 and 2007 the amount of waste each person creates has almost doubled from 2.7 to 4.6 pounds per day. The most effective way to stop this trend is by preventing waste in the first place. Landfills are loaded with items that could be reused. Creating new products from waste is called upcycling. It helps the environment because the items used are kept out of landfills and raw materials aren't used to create the new products.
Laurie White's Elisa Design lamps are upcycled from the finial to the base. Bases are made from a wide variety of reclaimed items. She fashions the shades by hand from eco-friendly materials like organic cotton and linen. Even the finials are reused from old unwanted lamps. If you add a LED lightbulb, your lamp will be about as green (and beautiful) as it can get. What You Can Do
According to the EPA, each American produces approximately 4.6 pounds of garbage every day.
We made musical instruments from reclaimed items for my daughter's 4th birthday party. The kids loved creating their own instruments and playing "music" with them in a marching band afterward. |
