Paint the Town Green

Find Your Favorite Shade of "Green" Paint
There is a true rainbow of colors available now in eco-friendly paint.  You can get a whole new look in your room, while creating a healthier environment for you and your family.  Get rid of that "new paint" smell, which actually comes from the emissions of a myriad of harmful chemicals called VOCs - volatile organic compounds.  The worst thing is that these emissions can continue floating into the environment long after the paint is dry.

Most major paint companies offer healthy alternatives to standard paint with low or no VOCs.   You can breathe easy because they are virtually odorless and don't compromise on performance.

What Makes It Green?
Paints with no or low VOC don't have the toxic chemicals that are in standard paints.  The emissions of these VOCs cause harmful off-gassing and potentially effect ozone depletion.  Off-gassing can also seriously impact your health.  Some VOCs may be carcinogenic; others can cause a variety of health problems like headaches, nausea, and eyes/respiratory tract irritation.

What You Can Do
  • Buy eco-friendly paint that doesn't include toxins, which produce harmful off-gassing.
  • Reuse or recycle old paint and paint cans.
  • Donating larger quantities of old paint to local charities (like Habitat for Humanity) or the local high school drama department.
  • To find recycling centers that accept paint and empty paint cans in your area, check out Earth911's website (www.earth911.com).

The EPA estimates that there are 69 million gallons of unwanted paint a year.  That's enough paint to cover 27.6 billion square feet each and every year.

My favorite zero VOC paint is Benjamin Moore's Natura line.  They have beautiful colors, the paint goes on easily and looks great - check it out at www.benjaminmoore.com.
